USA’s largest tree: Lahaina’s Giant Banyan Tree (Maui, Hawaii)
The 150-year-old Banyan Tree in Courthouse Square is the largest tree, not only in Hawaii but in the United States. It’s in the aptly named Banyan Tree Park by near the Courthouse in Lahaina.
This was planted about 150 years ago for the anniversary of a Christian mission in Lahaina. As the years went on, the originally small tree branched out, and as it did, it added aerial roots. Some of these are now trunks in their own right having dug into the earth and are now supporting the massive tree (it’s the size of a city block and about 60 feet tall.
