Maui attractions (Hawaii)
Maui is, to me, the most active of the Hawaiian islands. I own an every-other-year time-share week on Maui near Lahaina and it’s fun to plan activities from there.
Maui offers the traditional attractions of any Hawaiian island, like:
- luaus – the poi isn’t as bad as they say, try it, you won’t die
- helicopter tours
- hiking, wildlife viewing
- hula lessons, ukelele lessons, lei making lessons – try them all
- pineapple, pineapple, pineapple – so sweet
- surfing, parasailing, paddleboarding, golf, fishing
- shave ice with ice cream at the bottom – only try the sour plum if you try it first, it’s pretty brutal
- spam musubi – like sushi, but with SPAM!
- SPAM in general (at restaurants, it’s great with breakfast fried)
- wineries
Along with the standard animal experiences that are available on all the islands:
- whale watching
- swimming with turtles – just don’t touch them
- dolphins
- snorkeling and seeing fish, eels, etc.
It also has unusual attractions:
- a black sand beach – Wai’anapanapa
- a lavender farm – Ali’i Kula
- the giant banyan trees in downtown Lahaina
- the road to Hana – which is not nearly as bad as it used to be but rental cars are still prohibited generally
- Maui Ocean Vodka Tour – local vodka in a blue globe like the vintage fishing floats
And the very unusual:
- bike down a volcano (Haleakala; best done after seeing the sunrise from the peak)
- do go back later to see the museum and the crater in daylight
- snorkeling in a volcanic crater (Molokini) – excellent
- rappelling down a waterfall – I’ve not done this yet 🙁
So if you go there, you definitely don’t have to worry about running out of things to do, no matter what your interests.
