Skagway – Dog Sled Adventure
Skagway – Dog Sled Adventure
When in Alaska during the summer, you can pay a fortune to be helicoptered out to a snowy area where you can be pulled by sled dogs. Or, you can see what it’s like to train a sled dog team that is pulling a wheeled cart, which is what they actually do most of the year.
Skagway has a musher camp where you can not only ride one of those carts but also see the various ages of the puppies that will be the future pulling teams for dog sleds.
Depending on when you come, you might be able to even cuddle some of the puppies as well.
The dogs are eager to run and are excited to see a new crew of people come that they can drag through the track. They are super-energetic and it’s hard to imagine what they must be like if they were pets.
There’s also a dog playground with essentially a giant hamster wheel for the dogs to run in. Running is their favorite thing to do with their time. And that wheel spins very fast when they get in. The dogs pop in and out of the wheel very quickly.
There’s also a mini-museum type area which has sleds, uniforms, and pictures of past teams and mushers.
It’s a great experience to have when you are in Skagway.
Happy travels!
