Ancient library with a side of brothel – Ephesus, Turkey
Only the facade of this magnificent bulding still stands, and that only because it was reconstructed in the 1970s. Built nearly 2000 years ago, it was destroyed in an earthquake less than 200 years after it was built. It was Celsus’ mausoleaum, as well as a library holding thousands of scrolls.
It is interesting to note that according to historians there was likely a brothel attached to the building by an underground passageway.
