Snorkeling tips – how to have a great experience
If you are going snorkeling for the first time, there are some things you need to know to increase the likelihood of having an entirely good experience.
First, don’t rent the cheap stuff. You want a mask and fins that fit well, and a dry snorkel (that has a seal at the top and a purge valve at the bottom to help you keep water out of the snorkel), because if water gets in the snorkel, and you try to “breathe” it, it’s not a fun experience.
If you can, try out your stuff in a pool before going in the open water. If the mask leaks or the fins are too small, you can likely swap them out for the right sizes.
Don’t touch the coral or the other sea life – some are poisonous and others may be permanently damaged. Also, don’t put your hands near holes (because moray eels and other animals like to hide)
Use biodegradable sunscreen to help keep reefs healthy
Don’t exert a lot of energy if not needed For the most part, you can just float and gently swim in interesting directions.
Don’t snorkel alone. Ever.
Keep an eye on where you’ve drifted, and pay attention to any currents that may drag you far from your starting point.
And overall, relax and have fun. The underwater world can be really glorious to look at.
