Toledo, the city on a hill, Spain – UNESCO site
The central part of Toledo is on top of a steep hill that if you are smart, you will take a ride up or take the escalators (many of them) to the top. You can also take the stairs if you are so inclined, but that would be a substantial workout. If you walk up the road, you will come to this entrance to the walled city after a fairly steep climb up the side of the mountain. Inside, you will find this sign, before you get into the city itself.
Toledo began as a Roman Colony and is called “City of the Three Cultures.” Why? Because it has been the home of Christians, Muslims, and Jews over the centuries. The Tagus River, which goes around more than half of the city, is at the base of the hill. Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth a visit just to walk around.
There are several attractions worth seeing in the city. These are often considered the top three to visit:
- Alcazar – a palace/fortress
- The Cathedral
- The Monasterio de San Juan de Los Reyes
We also enjoyed the Toledo Railway Station.
