Bled Castle, Bled Lake, and Bled Island – Slovenia
When I was in Slovenia, one of the stops was in Bled, to see Bled Castle and the lake. It is a beautiful area, and I recommend visiting Bled if you are nearby.
The castle has existed (as proven by a deed) in 1101 and they don’t let you forget that 🙂 . See one of many signs to the left.
It has lovely views of Lake Bled and Bled Island. Inside is a small museum (with a gorgeous crib), well, artwork, and a printing shop.
Our hotel was down by the water, so I went out through the back, down past the shops. I picked up a piece of the famous Cream Cake (now a protected food by the Slovene government as the official recipe). It was good, but I’m not sure why it’s such a big deal here.
I turned right at the water and proceeded to walk around the lake. The area is beautiful and near the town has many walkers, but as you get farther away the walkers thin out. In the middle of the lake is Bled Island which reflects beautifully in the still water.
The water in the lake is crystal clear. All around the lake are beautiful views of the castle and Bled Island and the many pletna (a type of small boat) going back and forth.
It is a 2-3 mile walk, so takes a bit of time, but it’s an easy stroll and flat. You will likely stop to take a lot of pictures though, so plan time accordingly.
