Singapore Sling’s Birthplace

If you are in Singapore, you cannot miss that it is the birthplace of the drink, the Singapore Sling. There are even signs for the drink in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. You can get a bottled version there, but you can also search out the birthplace.

How did the Singapore Sling become such a popular drink? Well, in the past it was not acceptable for women to be seen drinking. So the Long Bar’s owner developed the Sling, which has gin but looks like a fruit juice, allowing women to drink in public.

Now you can get one at the inventing bar, The Long Bar, but it will cost you. About $40 US in fact. And you likely will have to wait in a long line as we did. And neither of us particularly liked the drink, but it was nice to be in an air-conditioned space with an iced drink for a few minutes.

There are free peanuts at every table (and you just throw the shells o the floor) but no other food, so people move through pretty quickly.
