Oahu Attractions

Oahu offers the traditional attractions of any Hawaiian island, like:

  • luaus – the poi isn’t as bad as they say, try it, you won’t die
  • helicopter tours
  • hiking, wildlife viewing
  • hula lessons, ukelele lessons, lei making lessons – try them all
  • pineapple, pineapple, pineapple – so sweet
  • surfing, parasailing, paddleboarding, golf, fishing
  • shave ice with ice cream at the bottom – only try the sour plum if you try it first, it’s pretty brutal
  • spam musubi – like sushi, but with SPAM!
  • SPAM in general (at restaurants, it’s great with breakfast as it is fried with eggs)
  • wineries

Along with the standard animal experiences that are available on all the islands:

  • whale watching
  • swimming with turtles – just don’t touch them
  • dolphins
  • snorkeling and seeing fish, eels, etc.

And then there are things that are unique to the island, like:

Byodo-In Temple, a relatively un-visited attraction, but worth the trip
Diamond Head – if you hike up, bring a flashlight (or fully-charged phone)
Chinaman’s Hat (Mokoli’i)

Another great attraction is the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you can learn about the culture of Fiji, New Zeeland, and all the other Polynesian island groups. Plan to spend a full day there.

Pearl Harbor is also on Oahu and well worth a visit (and it’s own post 🙂 ).
