Stone pancakes (Punakaiki) and seals – New Zealand
Geological wonders: Punakaiki Rocks – New Zealand
The Punakaiki Rocks are located on the northwest side of the South Island of New Zealand.
Punakaiki (Poo-nuh-kI-kee) is the closest the Maori could pronounce Pancake, so that’s how their name was born.
The rocks themselves are layered limestone that is worn away by the ocean, and left very cool formations that you can walk through on a path. There are also blowholes there.
That area of New Zealand is particularly fascinating, being on the edge of Paparoa National Park which has many natural attractions for you to see.
There are also seals in the area that are fun to watch.
