Jardin Majorelle – Morocco
The Jardin Majorelle is a beautiful but small botanic garden with many fountains, water features, and sculptures in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Jacque Majorelle, who was a watercolor painter inspired by the colors of Marrakesh, was the original designer of the garden and lived in a villa there for decades while developing the garden and grounds. When he and his wife divorced in the 1950s, the expensive to maintain garden fell into disrepair. In the 80s, Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berge bought it and started restoring the gardens, sculptures and the buildings.
The grounds contain 3 museums, about Islamic Art, Berbers, and YSL himself. His ashes were also scattered in the garden.
There is also a cute cafe where you can get a bite to eat before heading out of the relaxing garden to the frenetic streets of Marakech just outside the walls.
Many of the buildings are painted in a color now known as Majorelle blue – a very deep cobalt blue.
Pro Tip: you can get great pictures of flowers with a blurry background of Majorelle blue by going away from the flower you want in the foreground, and zooming up to it with the buildings in the background
Wow, those photos look absolutely amazing, it’s one of the places we missed while travelling around Marrakech last spring
