Avoid high season

If you can visit any location in the off-season, you can save a lot of money and avoid crowds at the same time. High-season tends to be any time kids are out of school. You can often get similar weather during other months, just do research online. The months that tend to be cheaper for lodging and flights are January, February, March, October, and November.

Similarly, flights follow general rules for being relatively high-cost and low-cost. In general, the following days tend to be cheaper – Tuesday through Thursday.

In a similar vein,

Look at the just off-the-radar destinations.

You may find cheaper alternatives with similar attractions in other areas. With a cheaper location, you may be able to stay longer and do day trips to other areas (perhaps to see unique attractions in your preferred more expensive site).

If you are traveling around one continent, you may be able to

Rent a camper van or RV

This way you can just move from place to place exploring in your car. If you’re of the marine persuasion, in some areas you can rent houseboats for a similar experience on that water.

Repositioning Cruises

Speaking of water travel, another option is to travel on a repositioning cruise. While some really only have a departure port and arrival port, others do stop a couple of places. And these are generally quite cheap by the day and cover transportation and lodging. Depending on how you travel you can use this as transportation to a new destination and/or just a relaxing trip in iteslf.
