Dealing with annoying bugs (tse-tse flies, mosquitos, and more)
Depending on where you go, you may have problem insects. From tse-tse flies, no-see-ums, mosquitos and more, they can ruin a vacation. Here are some options that may help you. Note: as an amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases
Protect your eyes/nose/mouth
So many insects want to suck water from wherever they can, and your eyeball is available, they’re all for it. And of course the biting insects think your neck is super tasty.
The easiest way to deal with this is having a mosquito net hood like this (available in several colors)., which can go over your brimmed hat.
Another option is to get one built into your sun hat like this, so that you can have a sun hat, and your insect coverage together in just one item.
This is available in several colors, but this is what I got for my safari as it blends in rather than draws the animals’ attention. I have a hot pink one for when that isn’t a problem too.
Just keep them away from your clothes in general
One thing you can do is to treat your clothing with permethrin, or buy clothing that is pre-treated with an insect repellent. These generally work for a few to many washes (check the labels). Here is one easy to use spray you can get on Amazon:.
Just spray your clothing and any gear (like your backpack or sleeping bag) with this following the directions, and bugs will mostly stay away.
Regular insect sprays for your skin
Another level to protecting yourself from biting insects is just some DEET on your exposed skin. I like this brand because it’s DEET and comes in a travel size.
Just spray your ankles, the back of your hands, neck, and any other easily accessible skin, and this deters most bugs from choosing you as their next victim.
