New Delhi’s Street Child “Connections Tour”
A walking tour with Street Connections is a highly recommended option when you are in New Delhi. The tour has an average 5 star review the last time I looked, and for a reason. It was a highlight of my time in New Delhi and I would take the tour again if I go back.
A former street child (now in gainful employment) takes you through crowded streets and narrow alleys in the old town of New Delhi. The tour is available Monday to Saturday mornings and starts at Jama Masjid, an easy to find landmark, but then enters narrow nameless alleys with spaghetti nests of wiring above.
You are soon in no man’s land on your phone map but still surrounded by people just going about their everyday lives while you hear all about the area, history, and the life of the former street child who is leading you around, answering your innumerable questions.
We saw a girl’s school, bread making, printing paper, a Jewish temple, Jain Temple, a courtyard building with a temple in the courtyard.
In the middle of the tour, you’ll stop for a chai break in one of the small alleys, where you can watch the chai made from scratch. We also got a spice tour, tried lotus seeds (similar to popcorn), and got a ride in a tuk-tuk.
After that, you’ll visit the main associated children’s shelter where the tour ends.
