How to sleep well in hotel rooms

When you are traveling, one thing that can be hard is getting to sleep in unfamiliar places. There are sounds and lights and smells that aren’t familiar, that may have to be overcome to sleep well.

There are several things I do, to try to ensure I get a good night’s sleep, that can be so important for the next day’s activities.

  • Have the eye mask from my sleep kit for plane/train travel
  • Set up the white noise (or fan noise, or river noise, etc.) sound generator on my phone (many are available at google play and the app store). If you don’t like the loops that those often make, I really like this travel white noise/fan noise/environment noise machine in both the home and travel versions – https://amzn.to/3RryVoa
  • Make sure the room is cool and dark. You can use a clip from the random things pouch, or even a clipped hanger from the closet to keep the shades closed. I also usually have a nightlight that I put in the bathroom so that I don’t have to deal with turning on a light if I need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
  • Use melatonin, diphenhydramine, or other sleep aids (check with your doctor) to assist sleep
  • Don’t drink too close to when you want to go to bed. While with the nightlight, you won’t trip over the toilet, it’s still nice to not have to get up.

Some people take their pillow from home, but I generally don’t have room for that. Others just take a pillowcase from home.

You can also bring a scented spray as well if you are worried about room odors.

Happy travels!
