Molokai Hot Bread (Hawaii, USA)
If you go to Molokai (which I do recommend despite its low number of visitors – or perhaps because of that), one must-stop is the Molokai Hot Bread!! To get this delight, you must go in the (probably dark) alley behind the Kanemitsu bakery at night. While not many outsiders know about this it is a great product of the Island of Molokai and a real treat.
The bakery is on Ala Malama Avenue near the center of Kaunakakai, and during the day the bakery serves the wide range of breads and pastries with a tropical theme as you would expect. But it is famous for its nightly “hot breads,” served with a choice of butter, strawberry jelly, blueberry jelly, cinnamon, sugar, or cream cheese (or “THE WORKS” if you can’t decide). You’ll know it’s going on because there will be a sign in the front window of the dark bakery.
You’ll have to go out late (around 8pm or later) to get this delectable treat. The town is virtually closed down, and you are headed to a dark alley where you can follow the lights/noise (and probably other people) down to the end of the alley, where there is a half-open Dutch door for you to order and pick up your hot-bread.
It is said that if you send friends out to get hot-bread, it will be half (possibly all) gone by the time they return. The bread is fresh from the oven and smells amazing, and you’ll just find yourself tearing off piece after piece. This is the only picture I have of a hot-bread, half-eaten, as they normally just disappeared before I even thought to take one.
