Domincan Republic – historic village
The attractive recreated 16th century Mediterranean village of Altos de Chavón is worth a visit if you are in the La Romana area. It is a cultural center and has shops, a museum, a church (shown above), and an amphitheater. Several buildings in the Old City portion of Santo Domingo are of that time and style. which is how that style was chosen in the late 20th century.
The cobblestoned village is along the Chavón River and has a great view of the river and the sea. It is a quaint “neighborhood” lined with lanterns and galleries and cute artisan shops (including pottery, weaving, clothing, etc).
The St. Stanislaus Church has a fountain and plaza in front (where you can often pose with a flowered hat adorned donkey). The amphitheater holds 5000 people and is in the Roman style but holds popular music concerts.
