This baby Jesus statue may have more clothes than you :-) (Prague)
There are many attractions to see in Prague.
The Baby Jesus is an unusual church attraction in Prague. The original Baby Jesus figure was a wedding gift to a royal couple. It was later given to the church to display.
The infant is in a set pose. One hand holds a globe with a cross on top (Jesus rules the world). The other hand has two fingers up in a blessing symbol. It is about a foot and a half tall. Made of wood, a coating of wax gives it a smooth finish.
Many people think that the statue has caused miracles. These vary from saving children hiding in the church, to healings of infirmities, and favors granted.
Miniatures, copies, and pictures of the Infant Jesus of Prague are big sellers in the area.
The infant normally wears white and metallic thread embroidered vestments shown above. However, several other dazzling embroidered outfits exist. Most were donated by royalty. This way Jesus can wear different outfits on liturgically important dates. Some have gemstones, others lace, yet others gold or silver embroidery. There is a small museum where you can see much of what has been made for it.
