Civet poop coffee – thanks but no thanks!

Bali Pulina is one of the best places in Bali to try the famous Luwak coffee.

The tour

When you arrive, you go through the massive door into a lush courtyard. From there, you are given a tour to see the different plants that they make their flavored coffees and teas with. You also can meet the civets who eat the coffee and then poop it out. The workers then collect the poop which has coffee beans altered by the enzymes in the civets’ digestive systems.

The coffee

Civet coffee is the most expensive coffee in the world. Because of the extensive work that must be done to produce it, it is quite expensive compared to “normal” coffees. Even in Bali, it is expensive (but comparable to a Starbucks coffee back home)

They offer a tea and coffee sampler, which we tried as well as the Luwak coffee. Luwak coffee is very acidic. It is supposed to be drunk black, but we didn’t like it much that way. We really did like several of the flavored coffees, though. We didn’t want to not finish the expensive coffee, so we added a bunch of sugar and drank it. However, we were not interested in buying any.

The food

We also got the banana fritters, because banana fritters in Bali are super flavorful. Served with a small container of sugar dip, they disappeared quite quickly in our presence.

The store

On the way out, there is a store selling many coffees and teas, as well as soaps and other similar products using the different plants they are growing to flavor the coffees and teas. The store is well organized and has many options for taking samples of different flavors home.
